Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls was the one place I was really excited to go on our road trip. I have really enjoyed every where we have been but this was fantastic. The falls were spectacular! I couldn't believe how big they were and how much water went over them.

Note to anyone who will be going, bring your own barrel, they do not have them available there. Since we didn't bring our own barrel we had to enjoy the falls from the side but it was still great.
The foliage was still beautiful. The walk along the river to the falls was so serene. There were hardly any tourists. It felt like we had the whole place to ourselves.
As we walked up to the falls all you can hear is a loud roar and then there they are. There are three falls. As Josh's dad says, "a wee one, a bigger than wee one and huge half circle." We went to the wee one and the bigger than wee one first. The Bridal Veil and American Falls. We got there in the afternoon as the sun was setting and the colors were magnificent. Pinks and purples all along the skyline of the falls.
Between the two falls there is a little ledge and these two geese were sitting on it. They were fighting the water and loving it. It was so cute!! I wish I was a goose so I could be out there for that view.
Here is Josh looking out from the island in between the two smaller falls. It was called Goat Island. In the background is Canada.
The view of the falls as we walked back to our hotel

Here is Josh with the Blues Brothers. Can you believe they meet us for lunch at TGIF? They must enjoy the fried green beans as much as me.
The next day we went back to go to the Cave of the Winds. There is an elevator that takes you down bellow the falls so you can get a different perspective. There were only six of us down there all by ourselves with the tour guide. Our guide said that normally there is a line of people from the top of the elevator down to the falls, out onto the deck and back again. They just shuffle them along, so we were lucky to go in the off season and really enjoy it.
During the winter there is so much snow and ice below the falls that they pull up all the boards before the winter so it is easier to care for. Each year they put down new boards below the falls. What a wet job to have to sit below the falls and pull up boards for days.
Back in the day you could actually go back behind the falls. Unfortunately there was a cave-in a long time ago and they stopped doing that. It was still great just to be down there. There was so much water spray though, it felt like it was a heavy rain shower.
Here is the view of the Horseshoe Falls. It was huge. This is one that people used to take barrels over. You can't do that anymore though... lame...

There was so much mist that you could hardly see the falls.
Niagara Falls this time of the year is great. The town is completely empty! We would walk through the streets and they were empty! It felt like a zombie apocalypse. We had no trouble going all over the park and seeing all the falls. I would definitely recommend going this time of the year so you can enjoy the beautiful falls without all the crowds. It was amazing!!!!
